Credit Basics

  • What is Credit?

Credit is your ability to borrow money with the promise that you’ll pay it back later. Usually, you’ll have to pay a little extra money back too. That’s called interest. Your creditors will approve or disapprove of your loan based on your credit history. Luckily, you can always work to improve your credit.

  • Should I Get a Credit Card?

Having a credit card is key to building good credit for yourself. That good credit will come in handy later down the road if you ever want to purchase a house or a car or even apply for some jobs. However, you shouldn’t get a credit card if you couldn’t pay your credit bills on time every month. Ideally, you should pay off the entire balance every month as well. That way, you’ll avoid losing money to interest due.

  • How Do I Know My Credit Score?

There are many ways to find out your credit score without damaging your credit. You’re allowed one free copy of your credit report from each of the three national credit reporting companies every 12 months. But you can also use a service such as Credit Karma to keep tabs on your score whenever you want without it hurting your report.

  • Good Credit vs. Bad Credit

It pays to have good credit. If you have a good credit history (summarized with a credit score), you’re more likely to receive favorable terms from a creditor. If you have bad credit, you may have to pay more in interest if you’re approved for a loan at all.
