How to File Taxes for Free: Tax Deductions and Credits

Before you consider filing, it’s important to be aware of what tax deductions you’re eligible for.

There are hundreds of deductions and credits out there, with the right deductions you can save thousands on your tax assessment.

Below are resources and information about deductions that can help you save money.

Home Office Deduction

With 57 million Americans freelancing and taking part in the gig economy, more and more of us are working from home.

Services like Turo, Airbnb, and Lyft give Americans more flexibility in their working life and help them to be financially independent.

If you’re one of these millions of Americans, you may be delighted to learn that there is a tax credit for working out of your home.

If you use part of your home exclusively for the use of business, you may qualify for the home office deduction.

This deduction is available to both homeowners and renters, and it applies to all types of homes.

There are two important conditions to be aware of when attempting to claim a Home Office Deduction: regular and exclusive use, and principal place of business.

Regular and exclusive use means that the space or room you’re claiming is used only for conducting business.

A room in your house used only as an office would qualify, while a common area like a living room or kitchen would not.

Principal place of business means your business is conducted from this location most of the time.

If you regularly work in an office, but your boss lets you work from home once a week, that does not count.

EITC

ETIC stands for Earned Income Tax Credit.

This is a tax benefit for working people with low to medium income.

To find out if you qualify, you can use the EITC assistant on the IRS’s website.

The key eligibility criteria for this credit include:

  • You must be married filing jointly, head of household, widow or widower, or single. You will not be eligible if you are married filing separately
  • Investment income must be less than $3,500 per year
  • Must not file Form 2555, Foreign Earned Income or Form 2555-EZ, Foreign Earned Income Exclusion
  • Your total earned income must be at least $1

Depending on your family situation, you can earn up to $6,431 with these credits.

It’s essential to understand that you will not automatically receive the EITC if you’re eligible, you must apply for it when you file your federal tax return!

Make sure you prepare all the necessary documentation before filing your tax return to make sure you can receive the EITC.

These documents include social security cards and social security numbers, copies of last year’s filings, all income statements, all records of expenses, bank account numbers and dependent care information.

If your EITC application was denied in a previous year, that doesn’t mean you can’t apply again this year. Just make sure you file the right forms with the IRS for this year’s tax filing.

Finally, there are a number of common errors which filers often make when applying for this credit, so make sure you know what they are and how to avoid them!

AOTC

Being a student in 2019 is expensive enough, with tuition and living expenses skyrocketing year after year.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, students are still required to file and maybe even pay taxes.

Therefore, students will be especially thrilled to learn about the AOTC, a tax credit made specifically for them.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) is a credit for education expenses paid by a higher education student during the first four years of their university study.

The maximum annual credit for eligible students is $2,500! This is no small change for a struggling student.

To be eligible for the AOTC, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be pursuing a degree or other recognized education credential
  • Be enrolled at least half time for at least one academic period beginning in the tax year
  • Not have finished the first four years of higher education at the beginning of the tax year
  • Not have claimed the AOTC or the former Hope credit for more than four tax years
  • Not have a felony drug conviction at the end of the tax year

There are several steps to claiming this credit.

  • First, the student must obtain a Form 1098-T tuition statement from their institution. This applies to both domestic and foreign schools.
  • Next, the student must file a Form 8863 with their federal tax return.
  • It’s essential to ensure that you qualify for the credit and have all proper documentation before you apply.
  • If you apply for this credit in error and receive it, and then are subsequently audited, you will be required to pay it back to the IRS with interest.

Child Tax Credit

As the name implies, the Child Tax Credit lets you claim credit for your dependent children.

This credit offers $2,000 per dependent child of the age of 16 or younger by the end of the calendar year.

If you have children this credit can have a huge impact on your assessment, and is not to be missed!

To qualify for this credit you must first make sure that your modified gross income is under the limit.

For married couples filing jointly the limit is $400,000, and for all other individuals, the limit is $200,000.

In addition to the income requirement, there are other specific eligibility requirements. These include:

  • The child must your own child, foster child or stepchild, or be placed in your care by a court of law
  • You must have provided at least half of the financial support of the child
  • The child must be claimed as a dependent on your tax return
  • The child must be a US citizen, US national or US resident alien
  • The child must have lived with you for at least half the year which you are claiming. There are a number of exceptions which apply to this rule.

If your children meet these requirements: congratulations! You could be facing a huge credit to your upcoming tax assessment.

Another important thing to know is that the Child Tax Credit is non-refundable, which means that if this credit reduces your taxable assessment to zero, you won’t receive any cash back and the remaining credit is lost.

Tax Filing

Now that you’ve figured out which deductions you may be eligible for, and collected all of the necessary documentation, you’re ready to file!

The IRS offers a wide variety of information and services on their website regarding how to file your taxes.

IRS Free File

The Free File section of the IRS website has information about how to file your taxes for free online.

You have two main choices when it comes to how to file your taxes: software or paper forms.

There are a number of excellent benefits associated with filing your taxes online using software.

First, it will definitely save you time, as electronic tax filings can be submitted directly to the IRS over the Internet, instead of waiting to for it to arrive via conventional post.

Second, you’ll get your money faster! When you file online and set up direct deposit, any tax refund you receive will go directly into your bank account, with no need to wait for a cheque in the mail.

Lastly, e-filing allows you to track the progress of your tax filing online, so you know exactly how it’s progressing and when you can expect to get that all-important refund cheque.

To get started you’ll need three things: an e-mail address, a copy your tax return from last year, and documents to prove your income and any deductions.

Validating Your Electronic Filing

In order to file your taxes for free online, you must sign and validate your electronic tax return by entering your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or your prior-year Self-Select PIN.

There a few different ways to find your prior year AGI. These include:

  • On your 2017 tax return, your AGI is on line 37 of the Form 1040; line 21 on the Form 1040-A or line 4 on the Form 1040-EZ
  • If you paid an individual or company to prepare your taxes preparer last year, you can contact them to obtain your AGI from that year
  • If you are using the same tax preparation software that you used last year, that software should have your prior-year tax return information for you to access
  • If you’re using a new tax preparation software, and the old software is still on your computer, the old software should still have an electronic record of your previous filing
  • If you have been issued an Identity Protection (IP) PIN(via a CP01A), you should enter it when prompted by your software. It will serve to verify your identity
  • If you are a first-time filer over the age of 16 enter zero as your AGI

If you can’t find your previous year’s AGI with any of the methods above, you can contact the IRS to request a transcript of your last filing. A transcript can be provided either electronically or by mail, but you will need to verify your identity with your social security number, date of birth, and other proofs of your identity.
More information can be found on the IRS’ website.
