16 Best Places to Sell Textbooks

Side Hustles

We may receive a commission if you sign up or purchase through links on this page. Here's more information.

Many people keep old textbooks after classes end, but textbooks can be surprisingly valuable. Going through your old books can be an easy way to earn some extra money. Lots of services offer fair prices for lightly used textbooks.

This article will cover a few of the best places to sell textbooks both online and in your area. Compare offers from multiple buyers to get the best deal possible, including shipping and other costs that could cut into your profit.

Bookscouter

  • Bookscouter: Best for comparing offers
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: Bookscouter collects and displays offers from more than 30 sites. This is the easiest way to quickly find the top offer for your book. Rather than facilitating sales, it'll refer you to the vendor once you've identified the best offer.
    • Pros: Bookscouter checks prices at more vendors than any other site we tested. It also displays user reviews for each platform to help you make sure you're working with a reputable service. You can even input multiple ISBNs at once to compare offers for the entire set.
    • Cons: Bookscouter can only direct you to other sites, so you'll still need to go through the sales process. Other comparison tools provide slightly more information about each vendor. For example, there's no way to determine whether a given site offers free shipping or requires a minimum order.

    • Minimum Order

      Depends on vendor

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

It’s worth mentioning Bookscouter first, because it’s an aggregator rather than an actual buyer. In short, Bookscouter gets near-instant estimates on your book from buyer sites and displays every offer. This helps you check competing sites and look for the best price.

Bookscouter supports more than 30 vendors, and it’s much faster than entering your information on every website. Simply input the book’s ISBN for a quick look at how much it could sell for. From there, Bookscouter will refer you directly to the buyer site to sell the book.

Bookscouter doesn’t buy books on its own, but it’s arguably the best place to start if you’re selling textbooks. There’s nothing more frustrating than selling something before realizing how much more you could have earned elsewhere. Offers can vary widely depending on the website, so it’s worth checking through Bookscouter before committing to a buyer.

BooksRun

  • BooksRun: Best for rewards
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: BooksRun is a vendor and buyer accepting offers on all kinds of textbooks. Prices are itemized based on the book's condition, so you can get more for a like-new copy. The site supports both PayPal and checks, and it pays out within four days of receiving your order.
    • Pros: You'll get free shipping on all sales, helping you keep more of each item's value. While BooksRun was slightly lower than the top price for the book I tested, it made a competitive offer. It's easy to sell books through the website or mobile app. You can view offers from BooksRun on its site or on a comparison platform such as Bookscouter.
    • Cons: BooksRun mandates a minimum order value of $15, and offers can be unpredictable. In contrast to other vendors, BooksRun doesn't support direct deposits.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      $15

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

Unlike Bookscouter, BooksRun is a textbook buyer offering reasonable prices for all kinds of textbooks. You can sell books to BooksRun through either the platform’s website or mobile app (available on both iOS and Android). The process of getting a quote and selling your book is relatively simple.

Instead of needing the book’s ISBN, you can search using the author’s name or keywords from the title. This makes it easier to find what you’re looking for without having the book on hand. In contrast, you’d need to have the book with you to enter its ISBN into Bookscouter.

Once you’ve found the right book, you’ll get a quote depending on its condition. For example, I checked prices on my old high school economics textbook and was offered $41.62 for a new copy, $40.81 for “very good” condition, and $32.64 for “acceptable.” BooksRun won’t take books with excessive damage or other issues, and it may return your copy if it isn’t as you described.

BooksRun offers a loyalty program to keep users coming back to sell more textbooks. Members get two points for each dollar they earn as a seller. You’ll also get two points on each dollar you spend on purchases and rentals. You can redeem points for a variety of rewards or use them to make a charitable donation.

BooksRun offers prepaid shipping labels on each sale, so you won’t have to pay for shipping. Transporting a textbook can be expensive, so this gives you the opportunity to keep more of the book’s value. On the other hand, the cost of shipping is factored into your quote, so “free” shipping is somewhat misleading.

The website offers payments through checks and PayPal, and you should receive funds within four days. Overall, BooksRun is one of the best places to sell textbooks online.

TextbookRush

  • TextbookRush: Best for selling electronics
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: TextbookRush buys textbooks and other items such as electronics, DVDs, and CDs. You can get a quote by entering the book's ISBN or UPC.
    • Pros: TextbookRush is catalogued by Bookscouter and other platforms, so you don't need to check the site directly. Selling textbooks and other items on the same platform is convenient. You have the option of receiving payment through PayPal, cash, or store credit.
    • Cons: Offers are guaranteed for up to 14 days, but the website claims that shipping can take up to three weeks. You could get less than the quote if it takes longer than two weeks for your package to arrive.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      $15

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

TextbookRush is another online textbook vendor buying and selling all kinds of textbooks. Like BooksRun, TextbookRush offers apps on both Android and iOS devices, making it convenient to sell your books. You can look for a book by entering either its ISBN or UPC.

In addition to textbooks, TextbookRush accepts a variety of media. You can sell other types of books, movies, video games, and even TV shows. The site is an easy way to sell a number of items at the same time. The website’s quotes are fully guaranteed for up to seven days, giving you time to compare offers.

Like many other vendors, TextbookRush offers free shipping on sales. You’ll get a prepaid shipping label when you accept its offer. TextbookRush currently pays sellers through PayPal, cash, or store credit. Store credit never expires and can be used on both purchases and rentals.

As with BooksRun, you should keep in mind TextbookRush deducts the cost of shipping from your offer. In other words, free shipping is just a way for the buyer to pay less for your textbooks. Selling a textbook in person can help you earn more money by avoiding the need for transportation.

Given the similarities between TextbookRush and competing platforms, comparing prices is the best way to maximize your value. That said, the ability to sell more than just textbooks is a nice perk, because you’ll only have to deal with one vendor.

CampusBooks

  • CampusBooks: Best for comparing sites
    Search for Your Book

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: CampusBooks is a price aggregator similar to Bookscouter and a few other platforms. It provides a few unique features, but it doesn't collect as many offers as Bookscouter.
    • Pros: Unlike Bookscouter, CampusBooks displays basic information about each listed vendor. For example, it let me know BooksRun pays extra for bulk orders and that SellBackYourBook offers free shipping.
    • Cons: I received more offers from Bookscouter on the book I tested, but they had the same top two prices: $46.28 from SellBackYourBook and $46.27 from Blue Rocket Books.
    • Free Shipping

      Depends on vendor

    • Minimum Order

      Depends on vendor

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

CampusBooks is a price aggregator perfect for anyone interested in buying, selling, or renting textbooks. Like Bookscouter, it compares offers from a number of sites and lists them for you in order of price. CampusBooks partners with a variety of well-known vendors including Amazon, BookByte, and SellBackYourBook.

For example, using the same economics textbook, I received offers from five platforms. Two were for $46, one for $41, one for $38, and one for just $19. Each price on the list is accompanied by the form of payment (e.g. cash) along with a short description of the service. Three of these descriptions noted the buyer would also pay for shipping, while two were unclear.

Once you’ve identified the best offer, you can click the “Sell” button to continue to the vendor’s site. This leads you directly to the “Complete Order” section on the target website. In other words, you won’t have to enter any duplicate information to sell your book.

CampusBooks provides the same service for rentals and purchases, so it’s a great place to come back to whenever you’re looking for the best deal on textbooks. There’s also a CampusBooks mobile app available for both iOS and Android devices.

The drawback to CampusBooks is simply that it doesn’t partner with as many sites as Bookscouter. While both sites led me to the same best offer, Bookscouter found 13 offers while CampusBooks found just five. With that in mind, Bookscouter may be the best place to sell used textbooks. You can always check CampusBooks if you aren’t satisfied with the offers you find through Bookscouter.

SellBackYourBook

  • SellBackYourBook: Best for value
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: SellBackYourBook is one of the top textbook buyback services online. You can also buy and rent used books. The website allows you to enter up to 30 ISBNs at a time.
    • Pros: SellBackYourBook had the highest offer for the book I tested, although that could vary for other items. Its offers are posted on both Bookscouter and Bookfinder.
    • Cons: You only have seven days to ship your books after receiving an offer.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      None listed

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

SellBackYourBook is another vendor buying, selling, and renting textbooks for students of all ages. While it doesn’t offer a price comparison tool, it seemed to provide decent prices on most textbooks. Both Bookscouter and CampusBooks recommended SellBackYourBook for the books I entered.

Getting a quote from SellBackYourBook is as simple as entering the textbook’s ISBN. You can do this online or using the site’s iOS or Android app. In addition to books, SellBackYourBook accepts video games, graphing calculators, DVDs, CDs, and more.

SellBackYourBook offers competitive prices, and sellers get free shipping for either UPS Ground or USPS Media Mail. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to sell books without an ISBN, teacher’s editions, or any other irregularities. The website has an A rating from the Better Business Bureau, illustrating its history and reliability.

Textbook Recycling

  • Textbook Recycling: Best for teacher's editions and other uncommon books
    Sell Your Books

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: Textbook Recycling is a textbook vendor known for accepting a wider variety of books than competitors. Founded in 1997, it's one of the oldest services still active.
    • Pros: Textbook Recycling buys conventional textbooks along with teacher's editions, international editions, and more. Most sites only accept student's editions. You can sell new copies for a higher price.
    • Cons: Offers are only guaranteed for three days, and Textbook Recycling only operates a desktop site. At $50, it also has one of the highest minimums. Orders of less than $50 are subject to a $5.99 shipping charge.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      $50

    • App

      None

Textbook Recycling is one of the most popular and flexible textbook vendors and buyers. Like many of its competitors, the site sells the books it buys back, so you can find used textbooks for a low price. Unfortunately, Textbook Recycling doesn’t offer a price comparison tool to make sure you’re getting a good deal.

You’ll have to search by ISBN to find the book you’re interested in selling. The textbook I used to check other sites wasn’t accepted by Textbook Recycling, but you may receive a decent quote on other books. You should try a few sites if Textbook Recycling won’t buy your book.

While Textbook Recycling provides free shipping within the continental United States, shipments from Alaska and Hawaii cost an additional $1.75 per pound. You can opt to receive funds through PayPal or as a check. Don’t forget to compare prices before selling your book to Textbook Recycling.

Textbook Recycling guarantees quotes for three days, so you have to send your books quickly after receiving an offer. The website estimates a seven- to 10-day processing window for physical checks. This drops to five to 10 days for PayPal transfers, but that’s still longer than some other sites take to pay sellers.

In contrast to many of its competitors, Textbook Recycling will buy a variety of unconventional copies. You can sell teacher’s editions, international editions, loose leaf editions, and more as long as the ISBN is an exact match.

Unless you live in Hawaii or Alaska, Textbook Recycling has virtually no disadvantages relative to other vendors. It’s a good place to check out as you compare prices and look for the best way to sell used textbooks.

Amazon

  • Amazon: Best for finding individual buyers
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: Amazon accepts trade-ins on a wide variety of textbooks, and can list items on the Amazon Marketplace. From there, buyers can view your books while searching through Amazon listings.
    • Pros: Selling directly to buyers could help you earn more money compared to selling to a middleman. Amazon also offers instant payment on some items.
    • Cons: Creating listings can be unreliable, and you may have trouble finding an interested buyer. You'll have to manage shipping costs if you opt to sell on the Amazon Marketplace.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      None listed

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

Amazon buys textbooks along with a variety of other items such as video games, DVDs, and more. Amazon’s prices are listed by sites like Bookscouter, so you don’t necessarily need to check Amazon to get a quote. If you do, receiving a quick estimate is easy by entering some information on the Amazon website.

One unique benefit of Amazon is that you can always list the textbook yourself if you aren’t interested in the company’s trade-in offer. Amazon is open to third-party listings, although sellers usually pay a few dollars in fees. This can help you get closer to the real value of your book.

Amazon sends a prepaid shipping label for trade-ins, so you won’t need to worry about transportation costs. You can view your shipment’s progress from the “Your Trade-in Account” section. The shipping label will include a deadline for you to start the trade-in process.

While many websites require the ISBN, you can search for Amazon trade-ins using the title or author. Once you find the right book, the website will ask some additional questions about its condition. Depending on your responses, you may receive a lower offer or nothing at all.

Amazon typically sends payment to sellers within two business days of receiving and approving the item, but some books and other items are eligible for Amazon’s instant trade-in program. In this case, you’ll receive immediate payment rather than waiting for processing.

BookFinder

  • BookFinder: Best for finding more offers
    Compare Prices

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: BookFinder is one of the top textbook comparison tools along with Bookscouter and CampusBooks. You can view quotes from countless textbook vendors and complete the transaction on the site.
    • Pros: BookFinder clearly displays the minimum buyback from each site. The website allows you to search for multiple ISBNs at once and find the best total offer.
    • Cons: Unfortunately, I didn't get as many competitive offers from BookFinder as I did from Bookscouter and CampusBooks. That said, all three sites came up with the same best offer from SellBackYourBook.
    • Free Shipping

      Depends on vendor

    • Minimum Order

      Depends on vendor

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

BookFinder is one of the top textbook aggregators collecting offers from numerous sites. While it came up with the same price as the aforementioned services, it found eight quotes — fewer than Bookscouter but more than CampusBooks.

In addition to buying back books, BookFinder can help you find both rentals and books for purchase. In fact, it came back with 78 new copies and 155 used when I searched for a title. This flexibility makes it one of the top places to buy, rent, and sell textbooks.

Unlike through CampusBooks, you may need to check each site to confirm shipping costs. BookFinder does let you know the minimum order value for each service along with the form of payment.

BookFinder also lets you input multiple ISBNs and determine the best offer for the entire set. If you have three books, for example, you may prefer to sell them to the same site rather than setting up separate transactions. This feature alone makes BookFinder one of the best textbook aggregators, and therefore arguably the best place to start your search.

Powell’s

  • Powell's: Best for in-person sales
    Sell Books

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: Powell's is a brick-and-mortar bookstore operating in Portland, Oregon. You can sell books in person or send them to the store using a free shipping label.
    • Pros: Selling to a physical store prevents transportation from affecting your quote. Powell's also offers pre-paid shipping labels on all orders.
    • Cons: Powell's doesn't focus on textbooks, so it may not accept as many items as other companies. Its prices aren't listed on comparison tools such as Bookscouter and BookFinder.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      Seven books or $8.99

    • App

      None

While Powell’s is based in Portland, Oregon, the local chain accepts returns from anywhere in the U.S. It’ll pay for UPS Ground shipping and send you an online offer before you ship the book. Like on most other sites, you’ll simply need to type in the ISBN to get an instant quote.

You can also take your textbooks directly to Powell’s for an in-person transaction. Either way, you’ll have the option to receive payment in cash or store credit. Buying hours are different from store hours, so check the schedule before going in.

It’s important to remember that Powell’s is closer to a conventional bookstore than a textbook vendor. While it’ll take some textbooks, that isn’t its focus, and it may not accept as wide a range compared to other sites. The economics book, for example, didn’t lead to an offer on the Powell’s website.

As a local business, Powell’s typically isn’t included by textbook aggregators like CampusBooks. You’ll need to check its website directly if you’re interested in selling textbooks or anything else. While it may not accept the book at all, it may make a better offer than other sites.

BookByte

  • BookByte: Best for longest guarantee
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: BookByte is a typical textbook vendor listed on many aggregator sites. You can search for books using the ISBN, title, author, or a keyword search.
    • Pros: Offers are guaranteed for up to 30 days, one of the longest guarantee periods among buyback services. You'll get free shipping on all orders, and the minimum order is just $10.
    • Cons: BookByte doesn't operate an app. The website only takes student's editions in good condition with all supplementary materials.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      $10

    • App

      None

Many comparison websites list BookByte, but you can also get offers on its site. BookByte’s search function is easy to use as you can search by ISBN, author, title, or keyword. You don’t need the book on hand to check BookByte’s offer.

BookByte guarantees its offers for as long as 30 days, one of the longest grace periods in the field. This gives you more than enough time to make sure its offer is your best deal. From there, you’ll receive free shipping on all sales, and you can earn cash through PayPal or check.

While BookByte expects books in at least “good” condition, you may be able to sell books that other websites wouldn’t accept. As long as the book has only minor signs of wear, you shouldn’t have any trouble selling it to BookByte as long as the order is worth a minimum of $10.

BookByte doesn’t buy instructor’s editions or other unconventional copies of books. Double check the ISBN to make sure you’re selling an exact match. You may not receive the full quote if the book is missing any supplementary materials like CDs or access codes.

Blue Rocket Books

  • Blue Rocket Books: Best for supporting charities
    Sell Books

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: Blue Rocket Books is an established buyback organization supporting three outstanding nonprofits. It pays sellers using either check or PayPal.
    • Pros: Blue Rocket Books provided one of the top offers on the book I tested. You'll also be able to support a good cause while earning money from old textbooks. There's a convenient price comparison tool that allows you to check purchase prices from other vendors.
    • Cons: There isn't a Blue Rocket Books app, so you'll have to sell through the website. Orders are only guaranteed if they're shipped within seven days and arrive within 14. Blue Rocket Books doesn't sell its own inventory.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      None listed

    • App

      None

Blue Rocket Books is another buyback vendor providing free shipping on all sales. It also supports three nonprofit organizations: Reading Is Fundamental, Recycled Reads, and Solar Electric Light Fund. Blue Rocket Books pays for books via check or PayPal.

The website offers free shipping labels on all buybacks. You can enter an ISBN for each of your books and get an instant quote on the full collection. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a Blue Rocket Books app on either Google Play or the App Store.

Blue Rocket Books accepts textbooks as well as other kinds of books, although everything needs to be in at least good condition. If some or all of your books are rejected, you have 10 days to request them back. You’ll need to pay for return shipping on any declined books, so double-check their definition of “good condition” if you’re not sure.

Blue Rocket Books was one cent behind the top offer for the book I tested. The website also displays prices on comparison services including Bookscouter and BookFinder. Orders are only guaranteed if they’re shipped within seven days and arrive within 14. Make sure to ship your items quickly after getting a quote.

While you can buy books on the website, Blue Rocket Books doesn’t offer store credit or sell its own inventory. Instead, you enter an ISBN and it outputs the lowest prices on rentals and sales. The ability to search for textbook deals is one of the site’s top features.

eCampus

  • eCampus: Best for flexible sales
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: eCampus has been around since 1999 and is one of the longest continuously active textbook vendors online. You can buy, rent, and sell physical books, and download digital books through the website or app.
    • Pros: eCampus is one of the only listed sites to offer a digital reader. There's an app on both iOS and Android as well as a surprisingly robust rewards program. If eCampus doesn't make an offer, you can also list your book or books on the website's marketplace.
    • Cons: The website only advertises free shipping on orders of at least $35.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes, above $35

    • Minimum Order

      None listed

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

eCampus launched in 1999, making it one of the oldest online textbook buyers still active in 2020. In addition to buying, renting, and selling physical books, you can access electronic textbooks through the site’s e-reader. The reader is available on all computers plus both iOS and Android. It’s easy to make an account and transfer purchases across all your devices.

You can check trade-in prices by entering the ISBN of your book (or books). eCampus allows you to input a number of ISBNs at the same time to get a bulk quote. From there, you’ll receive a shipping label and send the books to eCampus.

Being able to get a bulk quote makes eCampus significantly easier to use than some other sites. Instead of entering individual ISBNs and adding up the total, you can compare offers for your entire textbook collection. This streamlines the process of maximizing value without creating multiple shipments or working with multiple websites.

eCampus pays for textbooks through PayPal, direct deposit, check, or store credit. Selecting store credit gets you a higher payment, although you’ll have to use it on the site. You should receive payment within a few days of your shipment arriving at eCampus.

eCampus’s eWards program includes a variety of benefits that most textbook buyers don’t offer. You’ll get points for signing up, buying, selling, and renting books, and numerous other actions. Points can be redeemed for eCampus gift cards.

If eCampus isn’t currently accepting your book, you can also look for buyers on the website’s marketplace. This functions similarly to platforms like Amazon, and eCampus takes just 15% of each sale. All things considered, eCampus is the best place to sell textbooks online.

Decluttr

  • Decluttr: Best for selling electronics
    Start Selling

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: Decluttr buys and sells books plus a variety of electronics. You can receive payment through PayPal, check, or direct deposit, or donate the value to charity.
    • Pros: This is one of the easiest ways to sell a wide range of items at once. Offers are guaranteed for up to 28 days, and you can get quotes through the website or app.
    • Cons: Decluttr isn't listed by platforms like Bookscouter, so you'll need to check the website directly. Unfortunately, you can't choose your own charity; you can only opt to donate to one of Decluttr's partner organizations.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      $5

    • App

      Yes, iOS and Android

Unlike most of the vendors on this list, Decluttr buys a wide range of items in addition to textbooks. You can sell everything from DVDs and CDs to phones and books. This makes it the perfect place to get rid of a lot of unneeded items at the same time.

It’s worth noting that Bookscouter and certain other websites don’t check offers from Decluttr. You’ll need to go to the site directly if you’re interested in a quote. Decluttr also sells the items it buys from users, so you can use it for both sales and purchases.

It’s easy to get a quote and sell items using a computer or the Decluttr app, available on both iOS and Android. You can either enter the book’s barcode number or simply scan it using your phone camera. Your offer is guaranteed for 28 days, and shipping is free through a prepaid UPS label.

Once Decluttr receives your shipment, you should get payment within one business day. This is one of the fastest turnarounds online, and it’s particularly convenient if you need the money quickly. You can ship items at a UPS store or driver, customer center, or authorized retail outlet.

Decluttr pays sellers through PayPal, check, and direct deposit, or you can opt to have them donate the value of your items to charity. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information about selecting your favorite charity. Instead, Declutrr will contribute to a partner charity of its choice.

Aside from the fact that it isn’t always displayed on comparison sites, there are virtually no downsides to Decluttr. It’s one of the top platforms for textbook sales, particularly if you also want to sell other items.

College Books Direct

  • College Books Direct: Best for new copies
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: College Books Direct is a top textbook vendor. It's one of few services that pays more for brand-new copies. You can create shipments through either USPS or UPS.
    • Pros: College Books Direct has different prices for new copies, while many sites pay the same amount regardless of condition. The website accepts all orders worth a minimum of $10.
    • Cons: UPS shipping is only available on orders of at least $30. I received a relatively low offer on the textbook I tested.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes

    • Minimum Order

      $10, $30 for UPS

    • App

      None

College Books Direct is a relatively small vendor and buyer, but it’s listed on sites like Bookscouter. It uses similar processes to most competing sites, except that shipping generally goes through USPS rather than UPS.

While it offered just $13.50 for the book I tested at Bookscouter, prices may be better for other textbooks. It’s impossible to predict which site will make the best offer for any given textbook. College Books Direct pays slightly more for new copies.

Like Decluttr, College Books Direct provides free shipping and next-day payment on all sales. You can insure shipments if you prefer, but you’ll have to pay out of pocket. This may be worthwhile for particularly valuable items. USPS offers shipping insurance for a small percentage of the package’s overall value.

College Books Direct guarantees offers for 14 days after you check the price. Keep in mind that the website only accepts orders with a total value of at least $10. While all shipments can be processed through USPS, UPS is available for shipments of $30 and above.

Overall, the website provides a variety of convenient features that make it worth recommending over many other sites. That said, not having the option to receive store credit is a key drawback, particularly when other platforms pay extra in credit.

However, the most important consideration when comparing platforms is simply how much they’ll pay for your books. I was disappointed to find an offer for less than one-third of what other sites were willing to pay. If you find a better offer, there’s no reason to avoid College Books Direct.

TextbookX

  • TextbookX: Best for store credit
    Search by ISBN

We earn a commission on this offer.

    • Basics: TextbookX buys books and allows sellers to list their items for third-party buyers. You can buy and sell textbooks on the TextbookX marketplace.
    • Pros: You can always create a listing if you aren't satisfied by TextbookX's offer. You can opt for store credit rather than cash for a 5% bonus.
    • Cons: TextbookX isn't listed by comparison tools like BookFinder and Bookscouter. Marketplace transactions are subject to a 15% fee based on the sale price.
    • Free Shipping

      Yes (shipping credit)

    • Minimum Order

      None listed

    • App

      None

TextbookX is a textbook buyer and seller as well as a platform for independent listings. You can check for an instant offer or put your book for sale on the website’s marketplace. I didn’t see TextbookX on either Bookscouter or BookFinder, so you’ll probably need to go to the TextbookX website.

I tested the same book and received an instant offer for $28.45, roughly in line with many other sites. The price was itemized including a base price, sale commission, additional fees, and shipping credit. There was also a note reminding sellers that TextbookX doesn’t accept copies without all supplementary materials.

TextbookX only guarantees offers for books in at least good condition. The website describes good condition as including all pages with light writing on no more than one-third of the pages. Make sure your book fits the requirements before shipping it to TextbookX.

If you don’t receive an instant offer or want more money, simply list the textbook on the TextbookX marketplace. The site takes just 15% of your sales, similar to commissions on competing platforms. You’ll receive shipping credit whether you sell to TextbookX or a third-party buyer.

Shipments are processed within three days, although TextbookX pays out twice per month. You can choose direct deposits or store credit for an additional 5%. Given the flexibility to sell on the marketplace or using an instant offer, TextbookX is relatively convenient among textbook vendors. On the other hand, you’ll have to take more time to check the site’s offer rather than using an aggregator like Bookscouter.

Make Money from Your Old Textbooks

Selling textbooks is easier than ever, and each of these platforms simplifies the process and offers fair prices for all kinds of books. Many options also allow you to list your item for individual buyers. These are just a few of the best places to sell textbooks online.
