One fact shapes everything else: J. David Tax Law, LLC is a law firm, not a tax relief company. That decides who regulates the people on your case, and which problems the firm handles rather than refers out.

On the numbers that measure customer harm, it is the best-performing firm in this series, and the only one that names its lawyers. What pulls it down is marketing language its own legal terms contradict, and a proposed class action dismissed before any court ruled on its allegations.

Disclosure: Money Done Right founder Logan Allec, CPA, owns Choice Tax Relief, which competes with the company reviewed here. That is exactly why the scorecard above is based on published, verifiable evidence rather than opinion.

Who J. David Tax Law Is

The entity is J. David Tax Law, LLC, founded January 2, 2014 per BBB, headquartered at 7077 Bonneval Rd, Suite 200, Jacksonville, Florida 32216. BBB also carries the alternate name “J. David Tax Relief.” It lists 22 offices across Florida, California, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. The founder is Jonathan David Sooriash, Managing Partner.

The firm names 23 attorneys besides Sooriash on a public roster, which in this category is close to unheard of. A named attorney is a checkable attorney: each holds a state bar license, so there is a public record of their standing and any discipline, and a body that can disbar them. A “senior tax consultant” answers to nobody like that, and only a law firm carries malpractice exposure.

What we verified, and what we could not

  • Zayn Thompson, California, bar #341746 — verified against the California State Bar’s own site.
  • James Clarke and Lisa Goldschmidt, New York — verified through New York State’s official open-data attorney registration records. Goldschmidt’s record lists “J DAVID TAX LAW” with the firm’s own address and phone.
  • Jonathan Sooriash and Edward Warren, Floridacould not be verified. The Florida Bar’s database could not be reached across four attempts. Avvo shows “no misconduct found” for both, but Avvo is a third-party site, not the Bar.

Florida standing was not independently confirmed here. That does not mean anyone is unlicensed — the database was down, not empty. Check it yourself at floridabar.org for whoever handles your case.

Two gaps remain. Five staff titled “Director of Legal Operations” have licensure the site never states, against the firm’s claim to be “staffed exclusively by trained tax attorneys.” We are not alleging anyone practices without a license. Second, its bio calls Sooriash a Chapman University School of Law graduate, while Avvo and Super Lawyers indicate his J.D. is from Florida Coastal and only his LL.M. is from Chapman — incomplete rather than false.

Services Offered

The IRS list is broad: offer in compromise, Fresh Start, Currently Not Collectible status, penalty abatement, installment agreements, appeals, levy, lien and garnishment release, audit defense, criminal investigation defense, innocent spouse relief, passport revocation, US Tax Court litigation, payroll tax including Forms 940 and 941, and unfiled returns. It also names state agencies: New York’s Department of Taxation and Finance and California’s FTB, CDTFA and EDD.

Two things a tax relief company cannot do

These are the actual reason to hire a law firm. US Tax Court litigation: if the IRS issues a notice of deficiency and you want to fight it, that happens in court, and a relief company cannot take you there. It hands you to an outside attorney when you are already thousands of dollars in. Criminal investigation defense is a lawyer’s job from the first call, not a sales floor’s. If either might apply to you, it is the whole ballgame.

How J. David Tax Law Works

Stage 1: The free consultation

The consultation is free. What is not disclosed is whether an attorney or a salesperson runs that first call, so ask at the start. Then ask the question that protects you: get the name and bar number of the attorney who will handle your case, and look that person up before paying. Reviews name both attorney and non-attorney staff as contacts.

Its lead generation includes a co-branded Sean Hannity landing page with an “Attorney Advertising” disclosure. Read that for what it is: advertising, not vetting.

Stage 2: The engagement letter and the case work

The engagement letter governs your matter, so anything you were told on the phone has to appear inside it. An attorney then works the case toward whatever fits: an installment agreement, penalty abatement, hardship status, a garnishment release, or a Tax Court filing. Ask who updates you, and how often.

What J. David Tax Law Costs

The firm publishes no fee schedule and no minimum tax debt. Everything past the free consultation is quoted after a call, so you cannot compare a J. David quote against anyone else’s in advance.

A blog post on its site cites hourly rates of $200 to $500, up to $800 to $1,000 or more in major metros, plus flat fees of $2,000 to $10,000 or more. That is general market education about what tax attorneys charge, not this firm’s prices.

The guarantee contradiction

This is the most important consumer point here, and we cannot resolve it from outside the firm.

  • The Terms & Conditions disclaim all outcome warranties, stating services are provided “AS IS” with no guarantee of results.
  • The /our-process/ page says the firm works “closely with you to align on a strategy that achieves guaranteed success.”
  • ConsumerAffairs, Solvable and RetirementLiving all state that no money-back guarantee is offered.

Those three sit side by side, and we are not accusing anyone of lying. The practical reading: no lawyer can guarantee an IRS outcome, and the Terms are the operative document. If anyone promises you an outcome or your money back, get it into the engagement letter before you sign.

J. David Tax Law Complaints and Customer Reviews

Three BBB metrics get mixed up constantly, so keep them apart. On its Jacksonville profile as of August 2026, the firm is BBB Accredited with a letter rating of A+, accredited since February 6, 2015. Separately, 4.94 out of 5 from 141 customer reviews. Separately again, 2 complaints closed in the last 12 months, 11 in the last 3 years.

A BBB letter grade is not a customer-satisfaction score. The BBB states customer reviews are not used in calculating it, so the grade and the star rating measure different things. A company can hold an A+ while its customers are miserable.

Here the two agree, and we will say it plainly: this is the best complaint record of any company we have reviewed in this series. Eleven complaints in three years against 141 reviews, for a firm running 22 offices since 2014, is genuinely low.

Two caveats. Its complaint responses tend to be detailed rebuttals characterizing delays as client-caused. And BBB maintains at least four profiles for this one LLC — Jacksonville, Washington DC, San Diego and Orlando — each with a different accreditation date, so a page showing other numbers is not an error.

Elsewhere: ConsumerAffairs, roughly 5.0 from 97 reviews. Avvo, 10.0 out of 10 from 61 reviews, though that covers Sooriash personally, not the firm. Solvable, 4.5 or better from 69 reviews, but Solvable is a lead marketplace, not a neutral review site. Trustpilot, Yelp, Martindale, Lawyers.com and Google were blocked, so we publish no score for them.

“They stopped the letters and wage garnishments and negotiated with the agency on my behalf…saved me over $46,000!” Dean B., BBB, July 8, 2026

We could not verify that outcome, and results like it are not typical. From the other side:

“I hired J David Tax law about a year ago and had an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE experience which resulted in a $38,000 PENALTY.” “Barin,” Madison, WI, ConsumerAffairs, October 19, 2019

Note the date: 2019, well before the recent record above.

Is J. David Tax Law Legit?

It is a licensed law firm with attorneys we verified in two states. One lawsuit needs care, in both directions.

The Iverson class action

Iverson, et al. v. J. David Tax Law, LLC was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, Case No. 23-cv-718-jdp, before Judge James D. Peterson. It was a proposed class action, and every claim in it remained an unproven allegation from start to finish.

The complaint alleged, and no court ever ruled on whether any of it was true, unreasonable or illegal fees; legal malpractice “including… negligence regarding unlicensed lawyers”; and Wisconsin consumer-protection violations for “misrepresenting the firm’s qualifications and fee practices.” Those unadjudicated allegations were never tested at trial, and no finding was made that the firm did any of them.

On June 4, 2024 the court denied the firm’s motion to compel arbitration and denied a motion to dismiss. Those are procedural rulings about whether and where the case could proceed. Neither touches whether the still-unproven allegations were accurate.

On January 3, 2025 the case was dismissed with prejudice by stipulation, meaning the parties agreed to end it. No settlement terms are public, and reporting notes the filing includes few details on the outcome. Whether a class was ever certified is unknown.

That cuts both ways. The allegations were never proven, so do not treat them as things the firm did. A stipulated dismissal is not a verdict of innocence either. A case that ends by agreement ends without an answer.

What the searches did and did not find

We found no FTC action, no state attorney general action, no other lawsuit, and no bar discipline against the firm or any named attorney, subject to the Florida gap above. CFPB records and PACER were not directly queried. The searches found nothing, which is not a certified clean record, but it is a quieter file than most here.

J. David Tax Law Pros and Cons

Pros

  • An actual law firm: licensed people, checkable credentials, real bar discipline behind them.
  • Names 23 attorneys plus its founder publicly, which almost nobody here does.
  • The best complaint record in this series: 2 BBB complaints in twelve months, 11 in three years.
  • 4.94 out of 5 on BBB, roughly 5.0 from 97 ConsumerAffairs reviews.
  • Handles US Tax Court litigation and criminal investigation defense in-house.
  • 22 offices, free consultation, no enforcement action or bar discipline surfaced.

Cons

  • No fee schedule and no minimum debt published, so you cannot compare prices beforehand.
  • The Terms disclaim all outcome warranties while the process page promises “guaranteed success,” and three sites report no money-back guarantee.
  • Five “Director of Legal Operations” staff have undisclosed licensure.
  • Florida bar standing for two attorneys could not be independently confirmed.
  • Iverson, a proposed class action, was dismissed with prejudice by stipulation, with no public terms and no ruling on the unproven allegations.
  • Whether an attorney or a salesperson runs the first call is not disclosed.

Alternatives to J. David Tax Law

The most useful thing this table tells you is what none of these firms will: not one publishes an actual price. All you can compare in advance are the guarantee terms, the complaint record, and what kind of organization you are hiring.

Law firm? J. David Tax Law is the only law firm of the four, and that is the substantive difference here, not a marketing one. It decides whether a state bar can discipline the people on your case, whether malpractice exposure applies, and whether the firm can go to US Tax Court or defend a criminal investigation instead of referring it out.

Choice Tax Relief is owned by Logan Allec, CPA, founder of Money Done Right. It is staffed by CPAs and tax attorneys and best suits taxpayers owing roughly $10,000 or more.

Optima Tax Relief and Community Tax use the two-stage model, where day one’s number is not the total. Choice Tax Relief quotes a flat fee. J. David publishes no structure at all.

Who Should and Shouldn’t Use J. David Tax Law

Best for

  • Anyone whose case could reach US Tax Court, or who faces a criminal tax investigation.
  • Taxpayers with New York DTF or California FTB, CDTFA or EDD problems.
  • Business owners with payroll tax exposure on Forms 940 and 941.
  • Anyone who weights complaint volume heavily.

Not for

  • People who need a price in writing before talking to anyone. No firm here does that.
  • Anyone counting on a money-back guarantee, since the Terms disclaim outcome warranties.
  • Taxpayers who took “guaranteed success” literally.
  • People with small balances who need a minimum first, since none is disclosed.

The Bottom Line

J. David Tax Law comes out of this review better than most. The complaint record is the best in the series, the ratings are strong on two verified platforms, and the firm tells you who its lawyers are. Being a law firm is not a slogan here: it means bar oversight, malpractice exposure, and the ability to litigate in-house.

Two things stop this from being an easy recommendation. The pricing blackout is industry-wide but still leaves you unable to comparison-shop. And the gap between “guaranteed success” and “AS IS, no warranty” is yours to close before you sign. Get every promise into the engagement letter, get your attorney’s bar number, and check Florida standing at floridabar.org.

Outcomes in tax resolution depend entirely on your individual circumstances, including your income, assets, equity and filing history, and no firm can guarantee a specific result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is J. David Tax Law legit?

It is a licensed law firm that BBB dates to January 2, 2014, with an A+ rating and 4.94 out of 5 from 141 reviews as of August 2026. We verified attorneys in California and New York against official state records and found no FTC action, no attorney general action and no bar discipline, though CFPB and PACER were not directly queried.

Is J. David Tax Law a law firm or a tax relief company?

A law firm. Its attorneys are licensed and disciplined by state bars, it carries malpractice exposure, and it can take a case into US Tax Court or defend a criminal investigation in-house rather than referring it out.

How much does J. David Tax Law cost?

It publishes no fee schedule and no minimum tax debt, so the free consultation is the only way to get a number. A blog post on its site cites $200 to $500 an hour and flat fees of $2,000 to $10,000 or more, but that is general market education, not its prices.

Does J. David Tax Law offer a money-back guarantee?

No guarantee terms are published. Its Terms disclaim all outcome warranties and state services are “AS IS,” while its process page refers to “guaranteed success.” ConsumerAffairs, Solvable and RetirementLiving all report no money-back guarantee.

What was the J. David Tax Law class action lawsuit?

Iverson v. J. David Tax Law, LLC was a proposed class action in the Western District of Wisconsin, Case No. 23-cv-718-jdp, alleging improper fees, malpractice and consumer-protection violations that no court ever ruled on. Those allegations were never proven, and the case was dismissed with prejudice by stipulation on January 3, 2025 with no public terms, so the firm was neither found liable nor cleared.

What is J. David Tax Law’s BBB rating?

A+ on the Jacksonville profile, accredited since February 6, 2015, with a separate 4.94 out of 5 from 141 reviews and 2 complaints closed in twelve months, 11 in three years. The letter grade is not a satisfaction score.

How do I check whether my J. David attorney is licensed?

Ask for the full name and bar number, then search that state bar’s own site. We verified California and New York attorneys this way, but the Florida Bar’s database was unreachable across four attempts, so check Florida yourself at floridabar.org.
