During uncertain times โ whether on the global or personal level โ trip cancellation insurance can be a valuable credit card benefit.
Now, there are plenty of credit cards with trip cancellation insurance, and they can provide a great benefit, but itโs extremely important to be aware of the fine print that come with trip cancellation protection.
The fact is that you may not be covered for all that you think you are when you get a credit card with trip cancellation protection, so we put together this article to clear the air.
Table of Contents
Credit Card Trip Insurance Overview
Many of us have found ourselves canceling upcoming trips, and if you do, you may be on the hook for the cost of your trip, no matter why you cancel.
Even if you can change things like your flights or your hotel bookings, you may be charged a change fee.
If you pay for your trip with some credit cards, however, you might have trip cancellation protection โ an often-overlooked benefit that comes with certain credit cards.
What Is Trip Cancellation Insurance?
Trip cancellation and interruption insurance will provide reimbursement for trip expenses that are otherwise prepaid and nonrefundable.
The specifics of whatโs covered and how much coverage you have varies, depending on the credit card.
Trip cancellation insurance offers reimbursement when you have to cancel a trip before youโre set to depart.
Trip interruption is reimbursement when youโre already on a trip and something happens to lead you to have to cancel it and return home.
What Could Cause a Trip Cancellation Claim to Be Denied?
Credit cards with trip cancellation insurance will have very specific exclusions and covered losses.
The coverage is often pretty limited.
Most credit card insurance coverage will include surprise illnesses, but not necessarily illnesses linked to pre-existing conditions.
For example, if you have a chronic illness and you have a flare while away, itโs likely your insurance claim through your credit card company would be denied.
Situations that would be more likely to be covered include sudden death or a natural disaster.
Other things that could lead to your claimโs denial include:
- You didnโt pay for your trip with your card.
- Youโre going on a longer-term trip, and the length of your trip exceeds how much coverage you have.
- Youโre going somewhere thatโs not covered โ some coverage only applies if youโre traveling domestically.
- Youโve already made a certain number of claims recently.
- Your card only protects outbound travel and not return travel.
These are just examples, of course. Every credit card issuer โ and even cards from the same issuer โ may have different guidelines, and while we have researched the top cards with trip cancellation insurance in this article, always be sure to check our credit cardโs terms and conditions.
Travel Insurance vs. Credit Card Trip Cancellation Insurance
Typically, travel insurance offers more protection than what you would get with credit card trip cancellation insurance.
While travel insurance plans do have some of the same exclusions as credit card trip cancellation insurance, you can customize a travel insurance plan so that you get more protection.
The optional riders available when you purchase travel insurance can include coverage for missed connections, security, and political unrest as well as โcancel for any reasonโ coverage.
However, with credit card insurance, there are not only specific losses and exclusions but also very specific situations where you can make a claim for reimbursement.
Coronavirus and Trip Cancellation Insurance
With all thatโs currently going on, many people are wondering what their coverage options are if they cancel their trip because of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.
Insurance that is tied to your credit card benefits probably wonโt offer coverage unless youโre actually sick with the virus.
To make a claim with your card insurance, you would usually need to not only have the virus but also have been advised not to travel by a medical professional.
You might have coverage if someone youโre traveling with gets the virus as well.
Some cards specifically state that if you donโt travel because of an epidemic or pandemic you arenโt covered.
If youโre going because youโre practicing social distancing or youโre worried about being in a foreign country and getting stuck, your credit card cancellation coverage probably wonโt apply.
Luckily, many travel providers are providing refunds or waiving change or cancellation fees.
5 Things to Think about Before Getting a Credit Card with Trip Cancellation Insurance
If youโre thinking about getting a card that offers trip cancellation insurance, the following are things to consider.
What Types of Coverage and Exclusions Come with the Insurance?
You need to read the fine print before you get a card because it has trip cancellation insurance.
Not only are the offerings different between card issuers, but also between cards.
If you donโt know what youโre getting, you may be lulled into a false sense of security that would prevent you from getting other forms of travel insurance.
Would the Annual Fee Be Worth the Insurance Benefits?
If youโre thinking about getting a certain credit card simply because of the trip cancellation insurance, you have to sit down and decide whether or not the annual fee is worth it compared to the amount of coverage you might get.
For example, would it be cheaper to get a different card with no annual fee and then purchase separate trip insurance?
What Is the Process For Filing a Claim?
You will typically need to file a claim if you paid for a trip with your credit card and itโs canceled or delayed.
Youโll usually have to go through the issuerโs website, and in a situation like weโre currently facing with COVID-19, you may have to wait a while to receive a decision.
You have a short window of time to start a claim โ usually within a few weeks after the date of loss.
Youโll also need to supply documentation such as copies of your trip itinerary and proof of your covered reason, like a death certificate.
Should You Get Additional Travel Insurance?
Even if youโre thinking about getting a card with cancellation coverage, will you likely need additional coverage as well?
Youโll need to look at not only the situations that are excluded but also maximum benefit amounts.
For example, if you have a trip that you paid in total $8,000 for and your card only offers up to $5,000 in coverage, you might want to purchase more coverage.
Whoโs Covered?
Not only what but who is covered varies by card.
For example, you might find that if you purchase a trip with your card, all of your immediate family members are covered, while other cards might extend coverage to your traveling companions.
Chase Trip Cancellation Insurance
Certain Chase cards have trip cancellation insurance. Here are the details of Chaseโs coverage on the Chase Sapphire Preferred, as an example.
How Chase Trip Cancellation Works
Chase tends to offer among the best cancellation and interruption insurance options for cardholders, although the specifics vary between cards.
Chase trip insurance covers trips when they are paid for with an eligible Chase card, or when a trip or a portion of a trip is paid for with rewards earned on an eligible Chase card.
If you had a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, as an example, you would get trip cancellation coverage with reimbursement if a covered loss prevents you from taking your trip either before or on your departure date.
You may also receive reimbursement if a trip is postponed because of certain losses and fees are incurred when you set a new date for departure.
Chase coverage on the Sapphire Preferred card includes the cardholder and immediate family members. Immediate family members receive coverage even if the cardholder isnโt with them.
Coverage is up to $10,000 per covered trip with a maximum limit of $20,000 per occurrence. The maximum benefit amount per 12-month period is $40,000 for the Sapphire Preferred card.
You can file a claim online at eclaimsline.com or contact their claims line for more information.
Where Chase Trip Cancellation Insurance is Great
The coverage limits on Chase Sapphire Preferred trip cancellation insurance are a positive point, with maximum benefits of $40,000 in a 12-month period.
Thereโs also trip delay reimbursement if your common carrier travel is delayed more than six hours, and there is emergency medical and dental coverage for eligible medical expenses from emergency treatment during a covered trip.
Where Chase Trip Cancellation Insurance Falls Short
The downsides of Chase trip cancellation insurance (at least in the case of the Sapphire Preferred, which we are using as an example) are similar to what youโll find with other card coverage.
For example, while there is emergency medical coverage, itโs capped at $2,500, and if you face a medical emergency while youโre abroad, that may not even put a dent in your expenses.
There are also many things not covered, including:
- Travel arrangements canceled by a travel agency, common carrier or tour operator unless the cancellation is because of weather or a public transportation strike
- Changes in financial situations
- Changes in plans
- Pre-existing conditions
- Traveling when itโs advised against by a physician
- Declared or undeclared war
- Trips that are longer than 60 days
- Insolvency of the tour operator, travel supplier or travel agency
Does Chase Cover Coronavirus Cancellations?
Chase does not cover coronavirus cancellations unless you are actually ill or someone in your travel party is.
โDisinclinationsโ to travel because of a pandemic or endemic are excluded from coverage.

How American Express Trip Cancellation Insurance Works
If someoneโs trip is canceled or interrupted and they paid with, for example, their American Express Delta SkyMiles Reserve card, they may be able to file a claim and receive reimbursement.
To get coverage you need to have charged the full amount of your trip to an eligible American Express Delta SkyMiles Reserve card, or you must have paid in some combination with your accumulated points, certificates, vouchers, coupons, or discounts that you get from your frequent flyer program.
To file a claim, you would notify the administrator within 60 days of the covered loss, and also notify your travel supplier.

Where American Express Trip Cancellation Insurance is Great
Many of the American Express premium cards, including the Delta SkyMiles Reserve, offer the ability to receive a reimbursement of travel expenses up to $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 per account in a 12-month period.
They also cover itineraries that are outside of the parameters of a typical round trip. For example, they might cover combined one-way tickets.
Where American Express Trip Cancellation Insurance Falls Short
As with other types of trip cancellation, American Express has a fairly long list of exclusions that wonโt be covered. Also, for the best coverage, youโll usually find that youโre paying a high annual fee because the premium perks are available with the premium cards from the company.
Does American Express Cover Coronavirus Cancellations?
