Logan Allec, CPA here…my Gusto promo code discount referral link [click here] gives you a $100 gift card after you run your first payroll.
As a CPA who has used Gusto for my own companies for nearly a decade, I am a firm believer in Gusto as one of the best payroll software services for small businesses today.
Gusto isn’t directly advertising any introductory benefits on their site, so our promo offer is the best way to get a head start with Gusto.
Something is better than nothing — especially as a small business owner!

Click “Verify your email.”
Step 3: Tell Gusto the type of individuals you are planning to put on payroll.
After verifying your email, you begin the process of creating your company profile in Gusto.
The first step involves informing Gusto of all the different kinds of people you will pay using Gusto.
Here is what each options means:
- Myself: Select this option if you are intending to put yourself on payroll as a W-2 employee — for example, as the owner-shareholder of an S corporation who needs to pay yourself a reasonable compensation as W-2 wages from your S corporation.
- Employees in the US: Select this option if you are intending to hire domestic employees.
- Non-US employees: Select this option if you are intending to hire international employees.
- Contractors in the US: Select this option if you are intending to hire domestic independent contractors.
- Non-US contractors: Select this option if you are intending to hire international independent contractors.
- Vendors: Select this option if you are intending to pay your customer’s vendors through Gusto.
You should select all that apply.
Step 4: Continue telling Gusto about your business.
Next, Gusto will ask you a series of questions about your business. I have listed them all here below:
- How does your company currently run payroll?
- We’re new to running payroll
- We use another online payroll software
- We do it ourselves manually
- Is your company registered as an employer with the IRS? If you’re registered, your company should have a Federal EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS. If not, you can keep going, but you’ll need to register with the IRS before your company can pay people.
- Yes
- No
- Do you have a company bank account? If you do, Gusto will collect your bank details later. If not that’s OK, but you’ll need to open a company checking account before your company can pay people.
- Yes
- No
- Have you already hired your first team member?
- Yes
- Not yet (choose this option if you’re actively hiring or haven’t started yet)
- How many team members in the US are you planning to pay? Gusto uses this information to make recommendations based on your company size. If you’re not sure, share your best guess.
- [You indicate the number of US employees.]
- In which US state(s) do you and your employees work?
- [You select the states in which you and your employees work.]
- Do you have an accountant or bookkeeper helping your business? Many customers add their accountants to their Gusto accounts to access key info, set up accounting integrations, and help them run payroll.
- Yes, I use an external accounting or bookkeeping service.
- I have an in-house accountant or bookkeeper.
- No, I don’t.
- What industry are you in?
- [You indicate the industry you are in. Gusto will use AI-powered insights to match you with the right industry depending on what you type in the box.]
- What is your company’s website? This is optional but helps Gusto better understand your business.
- [You type the URL for your company’s website.]
- Does anyone in your company need to track hours worked or create hourly schedules?
- Yes
- No
- Does your company want to offer health benefits to your employees? Offering health benefits is a great way to attract and retain talent. With Gusto, you can manage health benefits in the same place as your payroll.

- I’m not sure — I’d like to learn more
- No
- Does your company want to offer a 401(k) retirement plan to your employees?
- Yes

- No
- Does your company have workers’ compensation insurance?
- Yes
- No
- What’s your desired first payday with Gusto? Not sure? No problem — just give us an estimated date. You can change this later.
- [You select the date of your desired first payday using Gusto.]
Answer these questions truthfully as it will help Gusto determine which Gusto plan is right for you.
Step 5: Select your Gusto package.
Next, Gusto will present you with the package it suggests for you based on your previous answers to its questions.
Now, I had answered “Yes” to the questions regarding health insurance and a 401(k) plan, so this is why it suggested the “Plus” plan.
If you aren’t currently offering these benefits to your employees, you may very well be able to use the the “Simple” plan, which is currently $49/month plus $6/month per person.
Gusto even has a plan specifically for single-shareholder-employee S corporations who need a payroll platform: the Solo plan. This plan is also currently $49/month plus $6/month per person.
