5 Ways to Get Up to 30% Cash Back on Your Amazon Purchases

According to Business Insider, the average Amazon customer spends $600 per year on Amazon and the average Prime member spends $1,400 per year.

And that was before coronavirus!  With the COVID-19 pandemic far from over, these numbers are sure to go up with so many people preferring to “socially distance” as much as possible.

But wouldn’t it be nice if you could actually get some cash back on your Amazon purchases?

Well, you actually can, and here are five brilliant ways to get cash back on Amazon so you can keep more money in your pocket.

1. Get 20% Amazon Cash Back With This Card (Expired Offer)

blue cash everday

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is currently giving 20% cash back on Amazon purchases for 6 months up to $200 cash back! (See Rates and Fees)

So just doing the simple math here, that means you get 20% cash back on your first $1,000 in Amazon purchases made in the first 6 months of having this card (and you get 1% cash back thereafter).

Possibly 30% Cash Back!

Also, you get an additional $100 welcome offer after you spend $1,000 on the card anywhere, on anything — Amazon or otherwise — within the first 6 months as well.

So, theoretically, if you spend $1,000 at Amazon with this credit card within the first place 6 months of having it — and that’s all you spend — you will get $300 cash back!  That’s 30% cash back on your Amazon purchases!  And unlike typical credit cards, this card allows you to carry a balance for certain charges (but not all).

Other Card Benefits

Now, you might want to use the Blue Cash Everyday to spend on other things as well because it has bonus categories as well.

Obviously this additional spend would dilute your possibly 30% Amazon cash back percentage, but you’d still be getting at least 20% cash back at Amazon on up to $1,000 in purchases within the first 6 months as well as bonus cash back on other categories.

So what are these other bonus categories?  I’ve listed them below.

  • 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 in spend per year then 1% thereafter
  • 3% cash back at gas stations, on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%
  • 1% cash back on other eligible purchases (unlimited)

Also, the Blue Cash Everyday has no annual fee and is currently offering 0% APR on purchases for the first 15 months! After that, the APR will be 15.49% to 25.49%. Terms Apply. (See Rates and Fees)

2. Get Up to 8% Cash Back on Amazon Devices

TopCashBack

There are dozens of sites and apps today that give you cash back for shopping at thousands of online retailers through their site.

These sites and apps are known as cash back portals.  My personal favorite is Rakuten, but unfortunately Rakuten does not currently have cash back offers at Amazon right now.

In fact, for the most part, Amazon isn’t included in many cash back portals.

However, Amazon cash back can be found on two cash back portals, at least in a limited capacity:

  • BeFrugal: 8% cash back on Amazon devices, 7% cash back on Amazon home security and smart devices, $15 Amazon gift card with purchase of new Amazon Prime membership.
  • TopCashBack: same as BeFrugal.

Now, these sites will not give you Amazon cash back on all your purchases on Amazon like the credit cards mentioned in this article, but if you were intending to purchase an Amazon device such as an Alexa or some other Amazon device, it can be a way to get some cash back.

3. Get 5% Amazon Cash Back With This Card (Prime Members Only)

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

Now, while the American Express Blue Cash Everyday has an amazing 20% (and theoretically 30%) Amazon cash back offer right now, it’s only up to $1,000 in purchases made in the first 6 months.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, on the other hand, offers unlimited 5% cash back on Amazon purchases.

Of course, as the name of this card implies, you must be an Amazon Prime member to be approved for this card.

Here is a list of all the benefits this card has:

  • 5% cash back at Amazon and Whole Foods Market
  • 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drug stores
  • 1% cash back on eligible purchases

There is no annual fee for the card itself, but obviously you must be an Amazon Prime member (which currently costs $119 per year).

4. Get 3% Amazon Cash Back With This Card (Non-Prime Members)

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card

If you’re not an Amazon Prime Member, you can get a reduced cash back rate of 3% on Amazon purchases with the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card.

Here is a list of this card’s benefits:

  • 3% cash back at Amazon and Whole Foods Market
  • 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drug stores
  • 1% cash back on other eligible purchases

This card does not have an annual fee.

5. Purchase Discount Gift Cards

Raise Discount Gift Cards

Discount gift cards are one of my favorite ways to save money on online purchases.

My favorite gift card reseller is Raise.com, but I’ve used some other good ones as well.

Unfortunately, discount Amazon gift cards are tough to come by, and when you do, the discount is typically only about 1% (or less) because Amazon gift cards are in such high demand and are (almost) as good as cash.

That said, if you do a lot of shopping on Amazon, checking on the availability of discounted Amazon gift cards every now and then might make sense.

However, keep in mind that if you purchase a discount Amazon gift card and use it to pay for your Amazon purchase, you obviously can’t use any of the credit cards above to make your purchase on Amazon, and the credit cards indicated above have higher cash back rates than the 1%-or-less discount you will likely be able to find with a discounted Amazon gift card.
